"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." Aristotle
While education is sometimes viewed simply as the age-old ‘three Rs', at Encounter we believe the school experience should be about so much more.
Young people are social, emotional and spiritual individuals and our holistic approach to students and their education is reflected in our attitudes and actions.
In an increasingly complex world, the importance of student wellbeing is paramount. We approach students as young people to be valued, supported and guided throughout life and believe their wellbeing must be viewed as a priority.
We also recognise that the exploration of the breadth and depth of human experience must begin in the early years, which is why we value and promote creative pursuits, including Music and The Arts, as integral aspects of student experience and development. In particular, students at Encounter are able to participate in the Wakakirri Performing & Creative Arts Festival, a unique opportunity for both expression and teamwork. Another way in which we value music is by including it as a specialist subject from Reception until Year 9.
Part of educating the heart must also recognise individual and collective identity, allowing students to express their personal and family history. This grounds them and provides opportunities for them to celebrate who they are and how that informs their understanding, their learning, their relationships and the world around them.
Educating the hearts and minds of students is the essence of the Encounter story...
