If you were anywhere near Victor Harbor’s coastline on Thursday, you would have noticed a sea of students. No, it wasn’t the ‘schoolies’ that had arrived early, but rather, 400 students from the Junior School at Encounter Lutheran College! Across the day, each year level from Lighthouse Early Learning right through to Year 6 participated in a beach clean-up.

The beach clean-up was initiated by Encounter’s Year 6 students and staff on their recent camp to Kangaroo Island when they were shocked by the sheer scale of plastic pollution on what they initially thought was a pristine beach.

“This experience highlighted the urgent need for action on plastic waste” said Leah Reid, Encounter’s Outdoor Engagement Coordinator. “We believe it is important for our students to understand the significance of this issue and take part in efforts to reduce pollution” said Leah. “As an International Baccalaureate school and a Lutheran school, it is essential that we provide our students with opportunities to engage with real-world challenges and contribute to positive change in their communities”.

The clean-up commenced on Thursday morning at the Inman River mouth to the Causeway, past the yacht club, croquet club, Hindmarsh River and concluding in the afternoon at Oliver’s Reef.

Let’s all play our part to keep our beautiful coastline looking pristine and free from rubbish.
