“It’s the spaces between the wood that help the fire to burn.” These wise words rang true for the students of Encounter Lutheran College, as they embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Gold Coast for the 2024 Australian Schools Basketball Championships. The week-long tournament, which concluded on Friday, 6th December, brought out the very best in the College’s U20 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams.
Representing the Specialist Basketball Program, the teams joined over 1,500 students from across the nation, Troy Wegener the Program’s Coordinator, said “this tournament has become Australia’s premier secondary school basketball competition. With talent, determination, and camaraderie on display, both teams left an indelible mark on the court and beyond”.
The U20 Men’s team, comprising Matawai Scarvelis, Oscar Potter, Otis Althorp, Mac Grivell, Saje Keenan, Daniel Sue, Keane Jamieson, Cody Drury, James Bland, and Eli White, showcased their grit and skill throughout the tournament.
Despite a challenging start, the boys fought back from a 2:3 win-loss record earlier in the week, culminating in a spectacular bronze medal finish. Among the highlights was their thrilling quarterfinal victory over St Luke’s Grammar—overcoming the top-ranked team in a nail-biting clash—and a dramatic buzzer-beater on Friday that left spectators in awe.
The U20 Women’s team—Lily Baxter, Gracy Woodhouse, Heidi Zadow, Jade Manuel, Tiani-Rose Jamieson, Jordyn Tuesley, Ruby Stockley, Maddie Dinh, and Lily Milosevic—exhibited growth and determination that turned heads throughout the tournament.
With wins against powerhouse schools and some of their best basketball to date, the girls capped off their campaign with a performance full of promise and potential. Despite a narrow defeat to their long-standing rivals Cabra College, the team’s development over the past year was evident and inspiring.
Bidding Farewell to Legends
This year’s tournament marked the end of an era, as the College bid farewell to four exceptional players. Year 12 students Matawai Scarvelis, Heidi Zadow, JJ Manuel and Lily Baxter played their final games in Encounter colours, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and excellence.
