Seminar Three: Calm and Connected Kids

This seminar helps parents understand the normality of friendship and peer challenges, know how to support children to act in positive ways towards friends, to help parents support their children to deal resiliently with friendship and peer hassles - and to help them support their children to make and keep friendships.

A 3-part series, 'Calm and Confident Kids' delivered by Kirrilie Smouth to help parents support and coach children with anxiety (eg separation anxiety, school refusal, phobias, worrying behaviours, anxiety about learning) - to help them face their fears independently, to use calm and positively language with children and to provide empowering empathic and supportive responses - whilst not 'rescuing' children unhelpfully from situations which are tough for them.

Kirrilie Smout is a clinical psychologist who has worked with children and teenagers for more than 30 years in private, government, and community settings. She is the director of Developing Minds, a team of 23 child and adolescent psychologists, and has provided therapy to over 5,000 children, teens, and families.

Kirrilie Smout (clinical psychologist working with children) will speak about:

  • What causes some children to experience more frustration (“big feelings”) than others - why it’s not “bad behaviour”
  • What to say and not say when children get frustrated
  • What parenting behaviours help children learn to feel more co-operative - and which accidentally make them worse
  • How to implement rules, routines and consequences in fair, empathic and connected ways
  • How to help children act more cooperatively and independently rather than rely on parent “nagging”.
