In the later part of 2024, Encounter Lutheran students Kael Grant, Fen Donaldson, Alana Anderson and Oliver Zwar took part in the “AO Blockbuster Challenge”- a collaboration effort between the Australian Esports League and the Australian Open.

Encounter Lutheran’s senior team came first in the State and second Nationally with judges commending the “ingenuity, sustainability, and inclusivity” seen across the entries received.

The challenge for students in Years 10-11 was to reimagine the Australian Open Precinct for the future using Minecraft Education, taking into particular account, innovation, sustainability and accessibility.

Encounter is looking forward to participating in future events with more than twenty students signing up for the first build challenge this year.

“Congratulations to all our winners and participants! The ingenuity, sustainability, and inclusivity displayed in this year’s entries are truly remarkable. We’re proud to partner with Tennis Australia to empower students, educators, and emerging digital creators.”

- Darren Kwan, CEO of the Australian Esports League

“Seeing the Australian Open reimagined through Minecraft Education has been both inspiring and enlightening. We applaud everyone involved, especially the teachers and parents who supported these students in pushing the boundaries of design, technology, and community engagement.”

Ridley Plummer, Senior Manager Digital Sales & Metaverse, Tennis Australia
