Community Comes Together to Celebrate Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children's Day

Encounter Lutheran College proudly hosted the annual Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children's Day celebration on Tuesday, 4 August, welcoming children, students and educators from across the Victor Harbor community for a morning of connection, culture and learning.

For the past several years the event has been held at Muwerang Kent Reserve, however, this year's celebration was hosted on the College's beautiful Wurar Ruwi outdoor learning space as part of a joint community initiative.

Children from Victor Harbor Childcare and Lighthouse Early Learning Centre joined TAFE Early Childhood students and Encounter Lutheran College Child Studies students to celebrate this year's Children's Day through hands-on cultural experiences.

Local Ramindjeri Ngarrindjeri woman Kyla McHughes led a series of engaging cultural activities, sharing her knowledge of traditional bush medicines, native botanicals and Ngarrindjeri language. Children delighted in exploring the scents and textures of indigenous plants, creating Australian animal clay sculptures and learning about the cultural significance of the natural environment. TAFE students, and Encounter Child Studies students also led the range of craft and nature play.

The morning concluded with a shared morning tea, providing an opportunity for children, students and educators to connect, reflect and celebrate the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day—a day that recognises the strength, resilience and bright futures while celebrating culture, family and community.
