By the Numbers: SA Athletics Stadium, Mile End

Some days are remembered for results. Others are remembered for how they felt. Our recent visit to the SA Athletics Stadium at Mile End was both measured in numbers but powered by something much more.

7:30 am

The departure time from Victor Harbor. An early start, tired eyes, nervous energy, and a bus full of students arriving with known quantities: the journey, the venue, the events, and the people beside them. What couldn’t be packed was what would come later.

100 minutes

The road between Victor Harbor and Mile End. Time to talk, laugh, sit quietly, and carry the anxiety that naturally comes before competition.

44 students

Students who represented their school with pride. Despite several withdrawals on the morning due to illness, those who attended rose to the challenge without hesitation.

15 events

Opportunities to compete, contribute, and step outside comfort zones. Many students volunteered for events beyond their original allocation—and when they finished, they didn’t ask to rest, they asked to do more. Again and again.

3rd overall

A fantastic team result. But the placing only hints at what was achieved.

Because, like a good fire, so much of these days is about the spaces between the parts; the moments that fuel the experience. The pause before the start line. The squirm that exists just before competition. The exhilaration that follows once you’ve taken the risk, felt the nerves, and tried anyway.

What stood out most was not just performance, but character. Students supported one another, encouraged without being asked, stepped up when needed, and embraced challenge with a genuine can-do attitude. They tried and in doing so, reminded us of the things that make humans so impressive.

Well done, team. The numbers say great; the moments say exceptional.
