A Sustainable First for Encounter
COMING SOON: A Sustainable First for Encounter
Encounter Lutheran College is proud to announce an exciting step forward in sustainable schoolwear, becoming the first Independent school in South Australia to introduce 100% natural fibre polo shirts to its uniform range from Term 2, 2026.
From 2026, students will have access to a high-quality, super-soft and breathable hemp polo shirt—an environmentally responsible alternative to traditional synthetic uniforms. This initiative has been championed by Year 8 student Sienna Stewart, a founding member of the Fleurieu Sustainable Fashion Gang (FLANG). Alongside her aunt, Anna Bulman, and seven others, Sienna has been instrumental in advocating for more sustainable uniform options. Their work places Encounter as the third school in SA to pursue hemp uniforms, and proudly the first Independent school to adopt them.
In partnership with Hemp Clothing Australia, the College expects the full range of hemp–organic cotton blend polo shirts to be available for purchase from the College Shop from Term 2, 2026.
These garments provide a more ethical and sustainable alternative to the petroleum-based polyester fabrics commonly used in schools. At the end of their life, hemp garments naturally biodegrade, avoiding microplastic pollution.
Why Hemp and Organic Cotton?
- Environmental Benefits: Hemp is among the most effective plants for carbon capture and requires considerably less water than conventional cotton. Grown without pesticides and paired with organic cotton, the fibres are biodegradable, renewable and kinder to biodiversity.
- Student Comfort: Hemp–cotton blends offer excellent temperature regulation and natural breathability, preventing odour buildup and supporting students’ comfort throughout the day. The fabric softens with each wash and is non-irritating—particularly beneficial for sensory-sensitive or neurodivergent students. Hemp also has high UV-protective properties, supporting sun safety.
- Durability & Value: Hemp is three times stronger than conventional cotton, offering impressive longevity. Odours wash out easily, colours stay vibrant, and longer-lasting garments reduce replacement costs.
- Aligned With Our Strategic Vision: This initiative directly supports the College’s Strategic Plan: People, Planet, Purpose—enhancing student comfort, reducing environmental impact and modelling responsible consumption.
Our manufacturing partners uphold strong ethical standards, including fair wages, excellent working conditions and zero child labour policies. Hemp Clothing Australia maintains a “quality or nothing” approach, ensuring students receive durable, premium garments.
