The Encounter Prayer Labyrinth came to life through a series of meaningful conversations between Pastor Nigel Rosenzweig (Victor Harbor Lutheran Church) and Kelvin Grivell (Principal of Encounter) in 2021. In December of that year, Pastor Nigel discovered a special $2,500 grant opportunity from the LLL (Lutheran Laypeople’s League), offered in celebration of their 100th anniversary. After the initial discussion, an application was quickly submitted—and by 31 January 2022, the grant was approved.
The funds covered the raw materials needed to build the Labyrinth, which was thoughtfully designed to incorporate a Stations of the Cross walk. With a goal to complete the project in time for Easter 2022, a dedicated team of volunteers from the Victor Harbor Lutheran Church generously offered their time and effort, joining forces with the College’s maintenance team who laid gravel and positioned granite boulders.
Meanwhile, Encounter’s Junior School students added their creativity and colour to the Stations of the Cross signage, while a congregation-run plant stall helped raise funds to bring the signage vision to life.
This beautiful collaboration between the congregation and the College has gifted our community a sacred space—a place to walk, reflect, wonder and pray. The Labyrinth stands as a lasting symbol of faith, partnership, and purpose.
A Prayer Labyrinth is a peaceful and reflective space designed to help individuals slow down, pray, and connect more deeply with God. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has a single, winding path that leads to the centre and then back out again—there are no tricks or dead ends. As you walk the path, you’re invited to let go of distractions, centre your heart, and listen for God’s presence. It’s a form of walking prayer that encourages stillness of spirit, clarity of mind, and openness to God’s guidance. “Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
At Encounter Lutheran College, our Prayer Labyrinth offers students, staff, and visitors a sacred space to pause and reflect. Whether used during worship, as part of a class, or in quiet moments of personal faith, the labyrinth provides an opportunity to step away from the noise of daily life and intentionally seek peace, purpose, and spiritual connection. As followers of Jesus, we are reminded to “keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25) and “seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). The Prayer Labyrinth is one way we create space to do just that—walking, praying, and drawing nearer to the heart of God.
