Opening Times
The Nest is a space that belongs to our students and as such, we ensure that they have as much access to the many innovative spaces and activities available. The Nest is open from 8.30am – 3.30pm each day.
During Lunchtime, an array of different activities are available for students away from the hustle and bustle of the school yard.
Zones in The Nest
Uluru n. A warm quiet home to begin your time in The Nest. Students explore new ideas, flick through books and discover facts, fiction and exciting adventures.
Mallee n. A collaborative corridor where students walk alongside staff and their peers to engage, inquire, discover and share.
Daintree n. A comfy viewing zone that captures the imaginations of students as they watch documentaries, films or their own clever creations.
Burrow n. A cosy spot where our younger friends grab a cushion and snuggle in for a story. We also welcome 0-4 year olds here each week with their mums, dads and grandparents to read together and create amazing works of art.
Perch n. A lofty study space where our Senior School students work independently. Staff also sneak up here from time to time to enjoy the view and the company of our big kids.

Encounter Quest
Encounter Quest is a quiz style House competition where one student per house, per year level is selected to be a part of their house team. This year the theme is ‘Where’s Wally’. This competition occurs annually at the end of Term 1 in The Nest at lunchtime. The focus for Encounter Quest is participation and connection across year groups. There is no need for students to prepare anything in advance. This isn’t a spectator event but we will share photos of the event so parents also get a glimpse of the fun online. We always look forward to seeing multi-age House teams working together in this exciting, friendly competition.
Book Week
Book Week is a celebration of stories, authors and the many life lessons we gain through literature. At Encounter, we embrace Book Week as an opportunity to connect over books through House activities, sharing favourite characters through dress-ups (and exploring new books and authors).
Author Visits
Learning the story behind the story always enriches our understanding. Gaining an insight into the process of a writer, including the joys and struggles, helps us view hard work, perseverance and frustration as a normal part of life. In listening to authors, we hope our students are inspired, connected, motivated and leave each session with a deeper appreciation of the books they read and the belief that everyone can be an author (published or not!).
Living Libraries
In addition to supporting students to research via traditional media, we create frequent opportunities for students to learn from experts face-to-face in small groups. We know this supports students in developing interpersonal skills to inquire deeply. They practise active listening, develop the art of posing relevant questions and gain an insight in the passion others have for a topic. The passion others share often ignites a spark for students that sees them genuinely want to investigate issues and ideas.
Year 6 PYP Exhibition
Our flexible learning space allows the library to be transformed. The Year 6s embrace this each year as they set up The Nest to share their group research about an issue or opportunity that matters to them. The Nest provides a warm environment for Year 6s to share their learning with friends and family.
Year 9 MYP Community Project Exhibition
Year 9 students are supported to make connections in the community and identify ways they can serve others. The culmination of research, reflection and service is shared with the College community in an Exhibition in The Nest.
Reading in The Nest
Students from Early Learning to Year 10 have allocated class time to browse, borrow and read in The Nest. This is a time of learning, discovering authors, new releases, popular reads and different genres. It is also an opportunity to have individual guidance to help find the right book at the right time for each reader. We value this time as we know having time to read without digital distractions is important for all.
