Encounter Lutheran College is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Shane Jurecky as its next Principal, commencing Term 3, 2026.

College Board Chair Sophie Ducrou said the appointment followed an extensive national and international search that attracted highly experienced educational leaders from across Australia and overseas.

“Shane demonstrated exceptional depth and breadth as a leader, a strong and authentic Christian faith, and genuine alignment with the things that matter most to us: community, staff culture, student wellbeing, and inclusive, high‑quality learning,” Mrs Ducrou said.

“His appointment was unanimously supported by both our recruitment panel and the College Board.”

A leader shaped by 30 years in Lutheran education

Shane Jurecky

Mr Jurecky brings three decades of experience across seven Lutheran schools in South Australia, Victoria and Queensland. He is currently Principal of Peace Lutheran College in Cairns and has served as Principal of R–12 Lutheran colleges for the past 11 years.

His qualifications include a Master of Education, Postgraduate Certificates in Educational Leadership and Business Leadership, and a Graduate Diploma in Theology and Education.

Mrs Ducrou said Shane’s leadership style and values strongly reflect the culture of Encounter.

“Shane is a passionate, dynamic and progressive leader whose vision is to foster an authentic and caring Christian community where all are inspired to contribute meaningfully to the wider world.”

Returning home to South Australia

After two decades working interstate, Mr Jurecky will return to his home state with his wife, Sarah, to be closer to family, including their two adult daughters, Emma and Sophie, who also work in education. Outside of school life, he enjoys all types of football and is a proud Adelaide Crows supporter.

In a message to the Encounter community, Mr Jurecky said he was honoured to be entrusted with the role.

“Encounter has been uniquely shaped by the dedication and faith of so many − a community that clearly lives its values, supports one another, and places the wellbeing and growth of every person at its heart.”

He also acknowledged the leadership of outgoing Principal, Mr Kelvin Grivell.

“The lasting legacy created under Kelvin’s exceptional leadership has nurtured a place of authentic faith and exceptional learning where everyone has an opportunity to thrive, connect and belong.

I look forward to building on this firm foundation through a collaborative transition with Kelvin and his team over the coming months.”

Mr Jurecky said he and his family were excited about reconnecting with the Fleurieu Peninsula.

“We are thrilled to be returning to South Australia and look forward to connecting with the wider Fleurieu community. It truly is a stunning place to live and work.”

Leadership transition and recognition of outgoing Principal

Mrs Ducrou confirmed that current Principal Mr Kelvin Grivell has been appointed as the next Principal of Cornerstone College, Mount Barker, and will conclude his 14 years of service at Encounter at the end of the first week of Term 2, 2026.

“We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary leadership Kelvin has provided over the past 14 years. His commitment, vision and faith have shaped Encounter into the thriving, values‑driven community it is today.”

She also acknowledged the leadership team guiding the College through the transition.

“We are thankful for the ongoing commitment of Tori Weiss, Jon Grear and Jacob Hambour as we prepare for this next chapter.”

College Board Chair, Sophoe Ducrou, also expressed her gratitude to the executive recruitment panel members who volunteered their time and expertise throughout the process: Craig Fielke, Executive Director of Lutheran Education South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia; Stephen Jude, Principal of Immanuel Primary School; and Trish Walker, College Board member, former Encounter teacher and lifelong educator.

A community entering its next chapter

Mrs Ducrou expressed gratitude to the Encounter community for its support throughout the recruitment process.

“Your feedback gave us clarity about what we were seeking, encouragement to cast a wide net, and confidence to take the time needed to appoint the right person.”

Mr Jurecky will commence as Principal at the beginning of Term 3, 2026.

Encounter Lutheran College acknowledges the Ramindjeri people of the Ngarrindjeri Country as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live, work and learn. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
